Our task was to design a self-sufficient city on a designated site in Vienna’s 10th District. With creative freedom to shape every aspect, we aim to envision a dynamic, fully functional urban ecosystem.
1. We reimagined the typical row house with a garden by stacking the floors vertically and placing the open space on the roof. This approach allowed us to conserve space for accommodation and created a shared open area instead of separate ones.
2. We introduced an aquaponic system in the cellar. This system combines aquaculture and hydroponics, using fish waste to provide essential nutrients for plants, while the plants help filter and clean the water for the fish. This sustainable method promotes efficient use of resources, providing fresh produce and fish for the residents while contributing to a green and eco-friendly environment.
3. Underground, we planned roads for deliveries to shops and businesses. The ground floor is reserved for shops, markets, and commercial spaces, with a large public area outside featuring cycling routes and communal spaces. Above the ground floor, we allocated space for offices or residential units, providing versatile areas for work and living. On the rooftop, we placed greenhouses equipped with an aquaponic system connected to the cellar for efficient resource management. The roofs also serve as open areas for residents to enjoy, promoting community interaction and leisure activities. The roofs are connected by bridges. This design integrates commercial, residential, and communal spaces in a harmonious, sustainable environment.
4. Our vision was to create a car-free city abundant with open spaces and greenery, designed to stay cool during hot summers. The self-sustaining aquaponic system supports this vision by providing residents with fresh fruits and vegetables, fostering self-sufficiency and promoting a green, eco-friendly environment.
This was the site assigned to us. We chose to retain the existing allotment garden settlement and focus our development on the fields to the south. Our goal was to preserve a well-functioning area while utilizing the open space to create something new without disrupting the established community.
Our vision was to design a city that balances sunlight, sustainability, and smart living. The buildings are shaped to ensure every apartment gets sunlight—morning or evening—making daily life more comfortable.
We imagined a car-free environment where everything is just a short walk or bike ride away. Deliveries happen underground, leaving the ground floor open for shops, markets, and vibrant public spaces. Above, flexible office and living spaces adapt to people’s needs, while the rooftops are more than just green—they’re alive with aquaponic greenhouses and open spaces linked by bridges.
This mix of living, working, and gathering creates a city that feels connected, efficient, and built for the future.
To bring life to the spaces between the buildings, we designed areas that reflect different everyday needs. We added a sports zone for active movement, a safe playground for kids to explore, and a quiet picnic area where families can relax together. These spaces are meant to connect people, create community, and turn the gaps between buildings into places full of life.
